Introduction

Da Liu Ren (or LiuRen) is one of the three most powerful oracles--Tai Yee, Liu Ren and Qi Men---to know both good luck and bad luck in aspects of time and space (direction). Tai Yee is used to divine the big events that happen with countries, such as earthquake, hurricanes, massacre, natural disasters, etc. Dunjia is generally used for military action and take what strategic methods in ever-changing battle field. LiuRen is mostly used for divining the general daily events, close to our daily life.

LiuRen study was of so antiquity that many experts claimed its origination at three thousand years before and had close connection with Taoism theory and application. It is a very accurate model set up by ancients to imitate the regular and periodical movements of the nature by incorporating ancient knowledge of astronomy, geography, calendar, Chi Kung, Chinese herbal medicine and astrology, etc. Also, LiuRen borrowed nutrition from Yin Yang theory, stems and branches knowledge, five elements and ancient assorted magic skills, in order to accomplish a complete presentation of the relationship between heaven, human beings and earth.

Liu Ren was established to be at a very high level of learning. In ancient China, general people seldom have the opportunity to look over it just a little bit unless there were accomplished Taoists or experts who would like to offer the knowledge.

In Western world, people revere I - Ching to such extent that they claim all things can be found the origin in it. The obscurity and paradox contents really make I - Ching looks so mysterious. But in fact, I - Ching only occupies a very small partition in the knowledge domain of Shu-Shu. Shu-Shu means the study of Chi and its special movement pattern. The operation pattern of Chi is invisible and stays out of the reasoning sphere of human's mind. The movements of Chi can be presented by the corporeal existence even Chi inside is intangible.

Every thing has its special Chi and special movements. Chi falls into five categories, wood, fire, earth, metal and water. When they meet they have to follow the operation law of five elements. Then comes out with different results.

I - Ching, the most-revered classic in Confucianism, only provides people with a generalized concept and understanding towards the world and lacks the accuracy and learning of astronomy and geography and calendar, etc. I - Ching only presents 64 hexagrams, each has 6 lines. So, the divination scope is limited to 64 * 6 = 384. To imagine using 384 lines to imitate the ever-changing world and assorted things predestines the failure and disappointments, to some extent. LiuRen has been served as a practical tool for understanding the practical world from a far-removed time before. Also, LiuRen adopts almost all techniques available in Shu-Shu. There are 720 basic presentation formulas because there exist 60 stems and branches harmonics and each harmonics can present with 12 kinds of changes associated with Heavenly Disk.

The Heavenly Disk used in LiuRen differs very much from Dunjia. Later we will talk about such subject. In LiuRen, there exist Four Pillars and Three Transfers. If using simplified twelve Earthly Branches to represent the divination seekers, the presentation formulas of LiuRen should be 2 * 12* 12 * 12 * 12 *720 = 29,859,840. Most people can know easily that LiuRen is perhaps the most accurate divination form to imitate the practical world and also the most complicated form.

Yet, to learn such art means a lot of difficulty in front and most people spent more than 10 years to digest the huge amount of contents yet still feel incompetent. That is a true story and newcomers really should understand this at beginning.

LiuRen should not be regarded only as a tool for divination. That means the people remain in their childhood if they always hold such viewpoints. Its philosophic value, its special way for knowing the world and for forming the views towards the practical world matters the most for every person who can have the chance to peer into this colorful and amazing world. Yes, we should always feel amazed at the wisdom of the ancient people who created this wonderful arts -- one tool which can help us to know many which remains invisible to us ever since.

NOTES; Here the date we used to show when it is one of twenty-four solar periods is not accurate. Please refer to a Chinese lunar year calendar to get the exact time in its special system. The beginning and ending of each periods are so accurate that hour and minute are used.

1 - 1 - 2. Yue Jiang
Yue Jiang means sun. The earth runs along its own route with sun as the center point. In the same time, the sun runs along its own route if we regard earth as the reference object. In ancient China, people divided the running route of sun into 12 partition, each has a name. In fact, Yue Jiang is used to describe the complicated movements of rotation and revolution of earth. In ancient China, people prefer to use 12 Earthly Branches to describe the 12 partitions the sun runs into. So, we have the following form.

1 - 1 - 3. Heavenly Disc and Earthly Disc
In LiuRen,the Earthly Disc always remains in the solid form, without any changes. It is presented with 12 Earthly Branches as follows.

Earthly Disc remains motionless, quiet, free of any changes. Yet, the Heavenly Disc always remains active and turns around Earthly Disc from outside even both of them can be presented with this same disc.

For example, soon after Yu Shui (TFSP02) one person comes for a divination at the time of Wu (11:00AM - 1:00PM). By looking for the above form we know Yue Jiang is Hai (), then we should turn around the Heavenly Disc (same as Earthly Disc) clockwise to make the Hai stop at the Wu of Earthly Disc. If the person comes at the time of You (). Then we should turn around the Heavenly Disc around clockwise to make the Hai () of Heavenly Disc to stop at the You () of Earthly Disc. In such way we first learn the method of how to turn the Heavenly Disc. In fact, in LiuRen, most of the time we don't show up the Earthly Disc, just present the Heavenly Disc.

So, for the example of soon after Yu Shui (TFSP02) one person comes for a divination at the time of Wu (11:00AM - 1:00PM), we get the following Heavenly Disc:

2 - 1 Set Up Four Pillars

2 - 1 - 1. 10 Heavenly Stems Hide Under Earthly Branches
First, people should learn to know that Heavenly Stems hides in Earthly Branches in LiuRen. The following gives the related information:

Now, let continue with the example that one person comes for a divination at the time of Wu (11:00AM - 1:00PM) soon after Yu Shui (TFSP02), we get the following Heavenly Disc:

Jia, the first Heavenly Stem, hides in the position of Yin () in the unmovable Earthly Disc. But now the position of Yin () is occupied by , so we write down above , we get the following form:

3 - 1 Make Up Three Transfers

3 - 1 - 1. Nine Methods Used for Making Up Three Transfers
Three Transfers include primary transfer, transit transfer and terminative transfer. Primary transfer describe the beginning phase of one thing or event, transit transfer the transitional changes and terminative transfer the results of the thing or event.

There are altogether nine methods used to make up the three transfers. We call them Jiu Zhong Men in Chinese. Nine methods are very important and practitioners should know they are the very basic methods and other 28 kinds of methods derive from the nine methods.

To learn the nine methods we should first get familiar with the five elements and their relationship, the 10 Heavenly Stems and 12 Earthly Branches and their relationship.

A. Restriction Between Five Elements
Metal restricts wood, wood restricts earth, earth restricts water, water restricts fire, fire restricts metal.
B. The Generating Relationship Between Five Elements
Metal generates water, water generates wood, wood generates fire, fire generates earth, earth generates metal.

C. Companion Between 10 Heavenly Stems
Jia () accompanies Ji (), Yi () accompanies Geng (), Bing () accompanies Xin (), Ding () accompanies Ren (), Wu () accompanies Gui ().

D. Companion Between 12 Earthly Branches
